Shirley Joan Ashby
Dec 25, 1935 — Apr 1, 2026
Shirley passed away peacefully in her sleep and went to be with the Lord on April 1, 2026, where she joined family and friends who had preceded her.
Shirley was born on Christmas morning in Lincoln, Nebraska to her parents Carl and Lydia Middleton and was the first of two children. The family moved to San Francisco where she grew up and graduated from Mission High School.
Shirley had two sons, Michael Roy and Brian William McKenney.
Shirley went on to work for IBM after high school. She worked at IBM for over 29 years. During her tenure she held many positions. Starting out as key punch operator, computer operator, strategic planner, and ending her career as an executive project leader.
Shirley was married to Robert Ashby for 39 years before Robert preceded her in death in 2005. Shirley and Robert were the perfect soul mates and shared many of the same interests. They joined Sunset Presbyterian church in Portland and became involved in the men’s and women groups, supper club, and Bereavement committee.
Shirley loved to entertain in her home and share her culinary talents. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed cooking for people, especially her family.
Shirley leaves behind her son Brian (Karen) McKenney, grandchildren Sam and Beth McKenney; and three step-daughters, Carol, Linda and Kathi.
Shirley will be laid to rest next to her mother Lydia and husband Robert in the Sunnyside Little Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Gardens.
There will be a family graveside service on April 24, 2026 at 1:00 pm at the Sunnyside Little Chapel of the Chimes Gardens, 11667 SE Stevens Rd, Happy Valley, Oregon.
