John Joseph "Jack" Colcolough, Jr.

Dec 20, 1931 — Jun 12, 2026

It is with deep sadness and gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of John Joseph “Jack” Colcolough, Jr., who passed away on June 12, 2026, at the age of 94.

Born in Charleston, South Carolina, on December 20, 1931, Jack lived a life defined by service, discipline, intellectual curiosity, and devotion to family. He was a man of integrity, humility, and quiet strength whose influence will be felt for generations.

Jack graduated from University High School in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1949 and proudly served his country on active duty in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. Following his military service, Jack used the GI Bill to attend the University of South Carolina beginning in 1952, where he also played USC basketball and continued to serve as a reservist in the South Carolina Air National Guard throughout his college years and for six years afterward. He graduated in 1956 with a degree in Chemical Engineering and began a distinguished 38-year career with DuPont, retiring in 1994.

An avid outdoorsman, Jack was widely known throughout the Lowcountry for his expertise in birding. Active in the Audubon Society, he spent countless hours observing, identifying, and documenting birds and sharing his knowledge with fellow enthusiasts. His appreciation for nature enriched not only his own life but also the lives of many others who learned from him and enjoyed his companionship in the field. He was also an avid fisherman who loved spending time on the water, as well as with his poker buddies.

Jack is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Marlene “Mari” Hutson Colcolough; his four children; six grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. Those who knew Jack will remember a proud Air Force veteran, accomplished engineer, devoted husband and father, respected birder, enthusiastic fisherman, loyal Gamecock, skilled poker player, and faithful friend.

A private graveside service with military honors will be held at Beaufort National Cemetery.

He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished. Memorials may be made to the Audubon Society of Hilton Head, PO Box 6185, Hilton Head Island, SC 29938,www.hiltonheadaudubon.org., or a charity of the donor’s choice.
