Otto Walter Ferrene Jr.
February 27, 1939 — April 12, 2026
Otto Walter Ferrene Jr., 87, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, passed away on April 12, 2026. Born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Otto was the son of Otto Walter Ferrene Sr. and Marie King Ferrene. He proudly carried forward a family legacy as one of five generations to bear the name.
He attended Presbyterian College, where he met Frances Harriet Welborn on a blind date. That meeting began a marriage that would span more than sixty years. Over time, both Otto and Frances became well known in their community, she as a teacher and he as an attorney, each contributing in meaningful ways to the lives of those around them.
Otto began his career in service to his country, commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He later served in Army Signals Intelligence in Germany. He completed his active-duty service with the rank of Captain and continued serving for more than two decades in the United States Army Reserve, ultimately retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. His military service, spanning over twenty-five years, was a reflection of his lifelong commitment to duty, discipline, and country.
After active duty, Otto attended the University of South Carolina School of Law. He put himself through law school while working as a nighttime security guard. He built a respected career in law, serving his clients and community with integrity, wisdom and dignity. He believed everyone deserved representation regardless of their background, financial standing, or the color of their skin. He took particular pride in his pro bono work, which he considered among the most meaningful of his career.
Otto lived on Hilton Head Island for 56 years contributing to its transformation and remained active throughout his life maintaining his legal practice to the very end. He found joy in time spent with family, friends, and his church community. For more than 42 years, he faithfully taught Sunday school at the First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head Island. He was also deeply involved in Rotary International and was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow, serving as a past president and founding member of both the Rotary Club of Hilton Head Island and the Hilton Head Island VanLandingham Rotary Club.
After the loss of his wife, Otto experienced a period of profound loss until he met Amelia Kirchoff, whom he married on Good Friday, March 29, 2024. Together, they smiled, laughed, made plans, and embraced each day as a gift. With Amelia by his side, Otto found renewed vitality, strength, and joy.
He is survived by his wife, Amelia Kirchoff; his 2 sons and their wives, Otto Ferrene (Inger Nordlund Ferrene) and Welborn Ferrene (Rebecca Trueman Ferrene), his grandchildren, Christian, Victoria, Tema, and Luke; his great grandchild Delilah; his sister, Linda Kitchin, and her family; and extended family who will carry forward his legacy.
A memorial service is planned for 2:30 p.m. on May 2nd at the First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head Island.
A Celebration of Life will follow in the spirit of the Lowcountry gatherings Otto so enjoyed. All who knew and loved Otto are welcome. Details will be provided at the service or for more information, contact Ferrene & Associates at 842-785-5184 or [email protected].
