Pauline R. Hirsch
November 16, 1926 — May 14, 2026
Pauline (Hales) Hirsch, age 99, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 14, at VillageCove on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Pauline was born in Bristol, England, in 1926.
During World War II, she met her husband, Albert Hirsch, who was serving in the US Army Air Corps in London. They wed in April 1945 and settled in Newburyport, Massachusetts after the war. Pauline worked in women’s retail for many years at a small clothing store in Newburyport, Hardwick’s, which they ultimately purchased and managed for several years.
Her husband was a letter carrier for the US Postal Service who ultimately rose to become postmaster. They were married for 71 years until Albert passed away at the age of 100 in 2016. They were members of Congregation Ahavas Achim in Newburyport.
Over the years, Pauline enjoyed doing needlework, playing cards with friends, and cooking. She was an actively involved grandmother, and she remained in the Newburyport area until 2021 when she relocated to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, to be near her son.
They had one son, Dr. Gerald Stephen Hirsch, who worked as a dentist in Newburyport for many years. He and his wife, Denise, are now retired and reside on Hilton Head Island. Other surviving relatives include granddaughter Amanda (Hirsch) Maeda who resides in New Jersey with her husband, Hirotaka Maeda, and great grandchildren Ellie and Ryden Maeda. Granddaughter Laura (Hirsch) Byran resides with her husband, Benedict Bryan, and their children Meghan and Conor Bryan, on the Isle of Man, UK.
A small family memorial will be planned later this summer.
