Maria "Joanna" Robertson

Maria "Joanna" Robertson, age 78, passed away on January 4, 2024 while at Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, SC. Joanna was born on October 21, 1945 in Bloomington, IN; daughter of Raymond and Lena Jones. She was the oldest of four daughters. Joanna graduated from Bloomington High School located in Monroe County, Indiana in 1963. She married her husband, Herschel on September 1, 1963 and they raised three children together. She graduated with honors with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina in May of 1990. Joanna obtained her real estate license in Indiana and sold real estate. In 1978, her husband’s job was relocated, and the family moved to St. Matthews, SC. The family became members of the St. Matthews Gethsemane Baptist Church. In 1981, the family moved 30 miles north to Columbia, SC. Upon completion of her degree from USC, Joanna worked for various agencies with the State of SC and spent a majority of her career as an Equal Opportunity Analyst for the State of SC Human Affairs Commission. Joanna is survived by her husband, Herschel; their three children, Chris (Veronica) Robertson, Stephanie (Mike) Volk, and Tim (Sarah) Robertson; three sisters, Patty (Sonny) Salter, Marlene (John) Richardson, and Jeanetta (David) Merida; five grandchildren, Christopher, Nicole, Sterling, Lana, and Alec; two great-grandchildren, Zoey, and Luka; and several nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family and countless friends. She was preceded in death by both of her parents. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at 12:00 pm at Thompson Funeral Home, 4720 Augusta Road, Lexington, SC with the burial to take place at Celestial Memorial Gardens, 3111 Delree St, West Columbia, SC.
