Irene F. O’Brien, 81, of Stony Point, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2023 after a brief illness. Irene was born in New York City on December 13, 1941 to Mary Elizabeth (Keown)and Thomas J. Farrelly. She graduated from Mother Cabrini High School.
She married her high school sweetheart James A. O’Brien on June 20, 1964, and they spent 59 wonderful years together.
Irene worked as a secretary for the Village of Sloatsburg for many years and was a long-time parishioner at St. Joan of Arc Church. After moving to Stony Point, she became an active parishioner at St. Gregory Barbarigo Church in Garnerville. She enjoyed traveling, especially to Cape Cod, where she spent many happy times with family and friends. She was known for her kindness and her delicious Irish Soda Bread, which she enjoyed sharing on St. Patrick’s Day and throughout the year.
She is survived by her dear husband James A. O’Brien, children Denise Windram (Richard), Anne-Marie O’Brien Cannon (William), and James T. O’Brien (Regina), grandchildren Megan O’Brien, Ryan Windram, and Mary Windram. She was predeceased by her sister Barbara F. Long.
She will be missed by everyone who knew her, especially her family and lifelong dear friends.
Family will receive friends on Thursday August 24, from 4-8 pm at TJ McGowan Sons Funeral Home, 71 N. Central Highway, Garnerville. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday August 25 at 11 am at St. Gregory Barbarigo Parish, 21 Cinder Road, Garnerville. Friends who would like to make a donation in Irene’s name are invited to donate to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
