Obituary for John F. Maher

John Francis Maher, 87, of Stony Point, NY passed peacefully on April 14, 2026 surrounded by his loving family.  John was born on October 5, 1938, in the Bronx to Thomas and Mary (Cullinan) Maher, the second of five children.  As was common for the times, John lived close by to his Irish aunts and uncles with many first-cousins who were his early childhood friends.

As a result of a double-date, John fell for Mary Sullivan from St. Brendan’s parish and continued dating through high school.  After graduating from All Hallows High School in 1956 and before any real job-searching began, John traveled to Ireland, honoring his roots as the son of Irish immigrant parents.  He worked on the family farm in County Tipperary, connecting with his extended family in both Tipperary and County Waterford.

A few years after returning from his summer in Ireland, he proposed to Mary in Our Lady of Mercy church after a parish bazaar.  They married on November 12, 1960, at St. Brendan’s church, a romance that lasted 64 years. Together, they raised five children and built a life grounded in faith, family, and friendship.  In 1970, they moved to Garnerville, New York, alongside many dear friends from the Bronx.

John began his career in banking in 1957 as a teller at The Dollar Savings Bank on the Grand Concourse in the Fordham section of the Bronx.  He progressed quickly through the ranks as a Computer Programmer, Assistant Comptroller, and Vice President in charge of the bank’s Electronic Data Processing Division. Through decades filled with changes and bank mergers, he remained dedicated, valued and hardworking, retiring in 2006 as Senior Vice President of Emigrant Savings Bank.

John and Mary cherished their time in Delray Beach, FL where they created many happy memories and extended their circle of friends.  As a Founding Member he helped establish the North Rockland Social Club in the early 1970’s where he was sure to be found each Sunday in the fall and winter watching his New York Giants do their best.  It was there that he was able to fine-tune his quick wit, make great friends, and entertain them with his funny stories.

John was a parishioner of St. Gregory Barbarigo parish in Garnerville, NY for 56 years, serving in a Parish Trustee role for several years during that time.  He also proudly walked his 4 daughters down the aisle at St. Gregory’s church on their wedding day.

John was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary, and his brother, Thomas. He is survived by his children, Marybeth and her husband Edward (Washingtonville, NY), Peggy and her husband Bill (Washingtonville, NY), John and his wife Erica (Cheshire, CT), Kathleen and her husband Jimmy (Pawleys Island, SC) and Christine and her husband Dan (River Vale, NJ); his sister Mary Ellen, his sister Margaret (Bert), and his brother Jimmy (Debbie).

John was a proud Poppy to his 13 grandchildren: Eddie (Ashley), Carly (Chris), Taylor (Eddie), JT (Ashton), Jen (Vee), Colleen, Jaclyn, Kaitlyn, Lauren, Brenna, James, Jillian, and Owen; and his three great-grandchildren, Christopher, Cameron, and Cara.  Nothing brought him more joy than being present in their lives – attending school recitals, cheering them on at their sporting events, and celebrating each and every milestone by their side.

John’s family will be forever grateful to the loving staff at the Joe Raso Hospice Residence in New City, NY for the care they provided.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to Joe Raso Make a Donation | Support Care in Your Community
