John P. Gaynor, of Stony Point, New York, passed away on December 24th, 2022. He was 88 years old.
He is survived by his children Maureen (Tom Wright), Eileen (Mullin), Jimmy (Maureen), Greg (Laura), and Brian (Kristen). He was predeceased by his wife Mary (2015) and sons Brendan (2020) and John (2021). He is also survived eight grandchildren Allison, Brian, Kevin, Linda, Matt, Nick, Ryan and Shannon.
John was born in the Bronx, NY. He graduated from Rice High School in NYC. While in high school he played on the basketball team and also won a Golden Gloves boxing title in his weight class. After graduating he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served bravely during the Korean War era and was a fighter on their boxing team. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. He returned to his home in the Bronx where he met the love of his life, Mary. They were married for sixty years. He joined the New York City Police Department and was first assigned to the 41stPrecinct (better known as Fort Apache) in the south Bronx. He served there for more than fifteen years before transferring to the 50th Precinct in Riverdale. He left the NYPD after more than two decades, earning many decorations. After retiring, he drove a school bus for Haverstraw Transit for over twenty years.
John and Mary settled in Stony Point and raised their seven children. They joined the St. Gregory Barbarigo Church and had a strong dedication to their Catholic faith and family. John also found time to coach Little League baseball in Stony Pont and was one of the original basketball coaches at St. Gregory’s. He was known for his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor andwill be missed greatly.
Services will be held at TJ McGowan Sons Funeral Home in Garnerville, NY on Thursday, December 29th from 4:00pm – 8:00pm. Mass will be held on Friday, December 30th at St. Gregory Barbarigo Church in Garnerville at 11:00am, followed by interment at Ascension Cemetery, Airmont, NY.
