Lawrence James Van Pelt, age 86, of Stony Point, NY, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 2, 2023 at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, NJ. He was born on April 1, 1936, in Staten Island, NY to Lawrence and Irene (Williams) Van Pelt.
The family moved to Haverstraw, where Larry grew up on Division Street and graduated from Haverstraw High School. Larry served in the US Army (1955-1958). Just prior to enlisting he married the love of his life, Janice Helbig in 1955, and enjoyed the next 66 years together. Larry was a master carpenter by trade, retired from the Local Carpenters Union 964. Larry is predeceased by his wife Janice (September 6, 2022), Sister Mary (Woska) and brothers William and Robert. Larry is survived by his brothers Charles, Paul, sister Stephanie Tinker and his four children, Deborah Van Pelt, Lawrence Van Pelt jr. (wife Amy), Sandra Blythe (husband Brent) and Jill Van Pelt; his seven grandchildren, Matthew Van Pelt (wife Erica), Elliott Van Pelt (wife Christine), Jason Van Pelt, and Sarah Van Pelt; Brent Blythe (wife Shirly), Brooke Herman (husband Max), Brittany Ostrower (husband Ryan), five great-grandchildren, Bryce Blythe, Devin Blythe, Willow Herman, Adeline Van Pelt, and Nora Van Pelt.
Friends, family, and others whose lives Larry touched are invited to the T.J. McGowan Sons Funeral Home at 71 N. Central Highway Garnerville, NY for viewings on Thursday, February 16, 2023, from 4-8pm and Friday, February 17, from 10-11 am, Funeral service from 11-12 pm, followed by burial at Mt. Repose Cemetery in Haverstraw, NY.
