Spiro Barberis, a long time North Rockland resident, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family.(Not due to Covid).
Spiro was born in 1940 to Evangelos and Evangelia on the island of Aegina, Greece. After serving 3 years in the Greek Navy and 17 years as a merchant marine he came to the United States to seek a better life. He met his wife, Rose Marie (Palluotto), in his journey. They were married in 1972 and raised their 2 sons and daughter. Spiro was an entrepreneur taking on many trades including painting (Spiros Paint and Wallpaper retail store in Haverstraw, NY), general contracting and restaurateur (Rosie's Coffee Shop, Haverstraw, NY). He enjoyed being in the outdoors as an avid fisherman and hunter, while spending his free time with his family. Spiro a beloved husband, father and grandfather is survived by his loving wife Rosie of 48 years, his children Evan (Heather), Costantino (Kristen) and Maria. His grandchildren Evalynn, Evan, Daniel and Amelia. He comes from a family of 9 brothers and sisters and is survived by his two sisters, Chrisavgi and Nektaria, along with many, many family members who still reside in Greece. Spiro's good nature and good deeds shined through his businesss interactions and personal relationships. He will be truly missed by all who knew him. "Hard work, good sleep and great food never hurt anyone!" Viewing services will be held at TJ McGowan Sons Funeral Home located at 71 N. Central Highway, Garnerville, NY on Thursday, September 17, 2020 from 3 PM -7 PM. Masks and social distancing required at the funeral home. Funeral services to be held on Friday, September 18th at 11am at the funeral home followed by interment at Mt. Repose Cemetery, Route 9W, Haverstraw, NY. I lieu of flowers the family is asking for donations to United Hospice of Rockland, 11 Stokum Lane, New City, NY 10956.
