Maria Pilar Fernandez Zapico
February 19, 1928 — August 27, 2018
"Pili" was born in Asturias, Spain to a mining family with 13 other brothers and sisters. She was the third youngest of the children. All her family struggled during the years of the Spanish Civil war for everything including food and she had a very difficult childhood. She cared deeply for her family and later in life married her love Julio Granda Cimadavilla. She stayed in Asturias and eventually moved with him to Germany looking for a better life. While in there she had her daughter Mari Pili. They retired back to Spain and moved to Gijon, Asturias. In 2006 Julio passed unexpectedly. Her only daughter Pili brought her mother to Charlotte, North Carolina, USA to be with her where she spent her remaining years.
She was the quintessential homemaker and very dedicated to her family and home. After saying hello to you, the next word from her mouth was usually "comiste?" as she had to be sure you were not hungry.
Another equally powerful interest was sewing. She loved being a seamstress and spent hours at her antique Singer machine in Spain. She especially enjoyed doing little projects for others. Later in life she became interested in working with beads and other materials making costume jewelry for everyone. Another late interest was coloring and she was very proud of her many drawings. She is survived by her daughter Maria Pilar Granda Fernandez and grandson Hector Adrian Alvarez Granda both of Charlotte, NC, USA. She will be missed.
Mientras estuvo all, tuvo a su hija Mari Pili.
