Olive Hazel Muir Kile

September 30, 1929 — May 16, 2026

Olive Hazel Muir Kile passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 16th, 2026, at her home in Southminster retirement community after a short illness. She was born on September 30, 1929 in Nutley, New Jersey to Robert Muir Sr, and Olive Muir. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in foreign languages from Douglas women’s college, a part of Rutgers University, in Brunswick New Jersey. She married her husband Bob in 1952 in Nutley, New Jersey and in 1962 the family moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. A lifelong educator, she taught local kindergarten in the sixties, then worked in the daycare division of the Mecklenburg County Department of social services. In the 70s she earned her masters degree in early childhood education, from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She taught college level high school Spanish with Charlotte Mecklenburg schools, and finished her career with Char/Meck schools spending a number of years as assistant principal at Beverly Woods Elementary school. She was a member of Myers Park Baptist Church for over 5 decades and sang for many years with the Myers Park choir.

After retirement, she and Bob moved to a house they built in the mountains of Western North Carolina, and lived there for 10 years before returning to Charlotte. They loved going overseas and eventually traveled to all five continents, New Zealand a number of islands in the South Pacific and the Mediterranean. Olive enjoyed reading mysteries by Agatha Christie, spy novels by John LeCarre and Robert Ludlum. On Sunday, you’d find her deep into the New York Times or Los Angeles Times crossword puzzle. An avid cook, she would often treat family and friends to gourmet dinners, on occasion using recipes she collected on her travels abroad. Upon returning to live Charlotte, the couple volunteered at the Charlotte Men’s homeless shelter, and traveled to the mountains of rural Peru on church missions.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years Robert Kile Sr., and her brother, Robert Muir Jr., of New Jersey. She is survived by her daughter, Janet (Ladd)Freeman of Winston Salem, son, Robert Kile, Jr. of Charlotte, three grandchildren, four great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Harriet, numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews. She is also survived by her beloved Charlotte “bonus family”, long time close friends who brought her additional grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

A memorial service in her honor will be held in the main sanctuary of Myers Park Baptist Church in Charlotte, on Saturday at 2:00 pm, the 20th of June. There will be a reception following the memorial service in the foyer of Heaton Hall, immediately adjacent to the sanctuary.
