James M. Underhill

James Marion Underhill, a lifelong educator and longtime resident of Yuba City, CA, passed away peacefully at his home on April 6, 2026, at 92.

James was born on March 30, 1934, in San Francisco, CA. When he was six weeks old, his family moved to Yuba City, CA, where he was raised and spent his life.

He attended local schools and later continued his education at Yuba College and California State University, Chico, CA.

He also completed graduate level coursework at Sacramento State and the University of California.

James began his career in education student teaching and teaching at Gray Avenue School in Yuba City, CA.

He later served as Vice Principal at Gray Avenue School before being promoted to Principal of Barry Elementary School, where he was known for his steady leadership and genuine care for students and staff.

Prior to his permanent move to Gridley, CA, James also served as Summer School Principal in Gridley, a role that introduced him to the community he would later serve for decades.

James was subsequently hired as District Superintendent of the Gridley Union Elementary School District.

He devoted decades to the Gridley school system, ultimately serving 17 years as Superintendent of the Gridley Union School District, elementary, and for 12 of those years, simultaneously serving as Superintendent of the Gridley Union High School District.

His leadership was steady, thoughtful, and grounded in service. James believed leadership meant doing what was right, supporting educators, and keeping students at the center of every decision.

His influence touched countless students, teachers, administrators, and families, and his legacy in Gridley endures. He retired in 1993.

James lived his life guided by the values of his Christian faith and was known for his integrity, compassion, and quiet sense of humor.

He was also remembered for his remarkable storytelling, a gift that brought laughter to family, friends, and colleagues alike.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, of 69 years, Shirley Underhill; and son, David Underhill.

He is survived by his three sons, Steve (Nella), Craig (Karol), Gary (Jill); six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

James and his family treasured many weekend getaways to Lake Almanor, enjoying relaxing times with family and friends. He and Shirley also traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe.

A private family service will be held at Sutter Cemetery.
