Samuel "Sam" Overstreet
December 1, 1933 — January 12, 2023
Sam Overstreet, Jr., 89, of Yuba City, California, passed away suddenly on January 12, 2023, at Adventist Health and Rideout Hospital. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, he spent his childhood in the North East.
After graduating from Burlington high school in Vermont, Sam enlisted in the Navy and served on the destroyers of the USS Yellowstone, USS Chambers and USS Miller as an Electronics Technician. He was honorably discharged in 1956, and enlisted as a Reserve Commissioned Officer Corp of Engineers from 1956 to 1964. Sam earned an Engineering degree from University of Vermont during this time. In 1962, Sam married his first wife, Josephine Labatore, and moved to California.
In 1986, Sam met his current wife, Vicki Freelove, who had two boys from a previous marriage. Sam and Vicki were very proud of their Scottish heritage and they enjoyed traveling to the Scottish games along the West Coast and for a period of time, on the East Coast, with their Scottish Clan Colquhoun. Sam was also a member of the Scottish-American Military Society, Clan Colquhoun Society of the United Kingdom, and Clan MacFarlane Society.
Sam and Vicki loved their travels through Scotland and frequently spoke of it. Another highlight for them was the eight years they lived in Queensbury, New York in the early 2000s. They spoke of their great times with friends and neighbors and new traditions they made while living there. Sam also greatly enjoyed fine Whiskey and his dogs he had over the years (Cricket, Maggie, and Molly).
Sam is survived by his wife, Vicki Overstreet; stepsons, Greg (Christy) Taylor of Yuba City, CA and Phil Taylor (Kelly) of Chico, CA; three step-grandchildren, Justin (Kyra) Taylor of Reno, NV, Katelyn Taylor and Morgan Lane of Yuba City, CA; and sister-in-law, Kristi Kindberg of Yuba City, CA. He has one great-grandchild, Kennedy Taylor of Reno, NV; and cousin, Joe (Dee) Overstreet of Moscow, ID.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Caroline Allen; and his step-mother, Beatrice Parker.
Per Sam's request, private services will be held.
