The entrance features a two-bay, flat-roofed porch supported by Doric columns, and the building retains a T-gable roofline in which one plane of the front gable sweeps down across the facade. When the building was adapted for funeral use in 1963, the sanctuary's structural integrity was preserved intact. Because the building originated as a church rather than a purpose-built funeral facility, Hankins & Whittington is the only funeral home in Charlotte with its own dedicated historic church chapel. Irvin White Hankins III, son of co-founder Irvin W. Hankins, served as general partner of the Dilworth facility from 1982 until his death.
