Elizabeth M. Whidden
August 23rd, 1924 - July 31st, 2019
"Belchertown - Elizabeth M. (Tucker) Whidden, 94, passed on July 31, 2019 in Belchertown, MA surrounded by her loving family. Born in Springfield on August 23, 1924 she was the daughter of William T.H. and Elizabeth (Worthington) Tucker. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Roy F. Whidden in 2001. Elizabeth worked in the Marking Room for the Belchertown State School for 22 years before retiring. She was a member of Hope United Methodist Church since the 1940's and a member of the Belchertown Legion Auxiliary Post 239 for over 50 years holding many positions including President, Vice President, and Chaplain. Elizabeth was active with America Legion District 2 as District Director from 1972- 73 and on the installation team. A proud moment for Elizabeth was in June of 2019 when she received her diploma from Belchertown High School, three-quarters of a century after dropping out and going to work to support the country during World War II. She enjoyed and was a very talented seamstress, crocheter and knitter, making many beautiful items for family and friends over the years. She will be deeply missed by her daughter Deborah Whidden of Wilbraham, son Henry Whidden of Tennessee, her grandchildren Lauriann Whidden , Heather Costabile and husband Roy, Amity Gottschalk and Brian Sunter and wife Lisa, along with her great grandchildren, Erina, Kayla, Seth, Ashley, Joseph, Cole, Alexis, and Adalena. Additionally her great great grandchildren, Hayden, Bryson, Linden and Vera survive her. She is also survived by her sister, Mable Lofland of Granby. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Bert Desomier, Caroline Slate, Alice Noel, Thomas Tucker and Emma Hooey. A calling hour will he held on Wednesday, August 7th from 10-11:00 am, followed by a Service at 11:00 am, all at Hope United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Quabbin Park Cemetery in Ware. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund, 26 Broadway, 14th Floor New York, NY 10004. Beers and Story Belchertown Funeral has been entrusted with arrangements."
