Dr. Fred Lorey, 67, of Pleasant Hill, CA, died suddenly but peacefully at home on September 2, 2020, with his brother, a long-time friend, and his 2 Labrador Retrievers at his side. He was the beloved brother of John (Fran) Lorey, Martha (Chris) Weber, and Mary Ann (Bob) Brosso, as well as the uncle of Greta, Kyle, & Evan Lorey. Fred is also survived by his adoring aunt, Elaine Plumb, and loving stepmother, Emma Lorey. His parents, Maxine and Dave Lorey, predeceased him in death. Fred was a selfless, brilliant, funny human being who loved animals, Pepsi, TV, and chocolate. He also never shied away from a lively political debate! Furthermore, Fred was recognized nationally and internationally as an expert in the field of genetic disease testing, especially that of newborn screening. Prior to retiring, Fred was Acting Division Chief of the Genetic Disease Screening Program (GDSP) at the CA Dept. of Public Health. He received his B.S. degree in Anthropology and Biology from the College of William and Mary and his Ph.D. degree in Anthropology and Genetics from the University of California at Davis. He was active in many professional organizations and served on numerous state, national, and international advisory committees. Fred published frequently in a variety of journals and was often cited in various medical publications. He received many awards and honors, including but not limited to his appointment to the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Advisory Committee for Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children. Additionally, he served on the Boards of other professional associations, such as the Save the Babies Through Screening Foundation and the International Society of Neonatal Screening. After leaving the GDSP, Fred was sought after as a consultant in the field of genetic disease screening. He travelled to numerous developing countries to assist in their expansion and development of newborn screening. Beyond his commitment to genetics and newborn screening, Fred had a mutual unconditional love for and devotion to/from his pets, particularly his Labs. He enjoyed breeding them and following their descendants accomplishments. He also had become a skilled genealogist, completing not only his own detailed family tree, but those of several others. Fred enjoyed travelling and landscaping, as well. One related passion was the endless pursuit of the leak in his koi pond! Fred respected life and worked to preserve it, including that of his own, as he fought long and valiantly against the rare cancer (carcinoid) that beset him. He used his own scientific background to fight the disease, researching clinical trials and networking with physicians from numerous medical institutions who had expertise in this disease. Fred had a kind and gentle heart and led his life with a strong ethical center, often fervently defending the rights of others. He was loved greatly by his family and friends and respected by many more. He will be sorely missed.
