Mother Sara McFadden was born March 5, 1911 to the late Edward and Lena Butler In Riverside, CA. At the age of six, the family moved to Los Angeles. She attended the Los Angeles schools and received her education at McKinley Elementary School and Jefferson High School. She grew up in a religious home under guidance of her parents and attending the Young People Missionary Church. She met the Rev. C. Lewis McFadden in 1945 and they were united in Holy Matrimony on July 12, 1948. Together they joined the Greater Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Dr. George Washington, Jr., Pastor. They were very involved in the church; They attended Bible study, Mission, were Sunday School Teachers and sang in the choir. They were active members until Rev. McFadden was called to the Friendship Baptist Church in Seaside, CA in 1956. She joined the Friendship Baptist Church and continued to work in the church as a member of the Friendship Family and as a pastor's wife. Mother McFadden was a very classy lady. Her style and flare for fashion were second to none. When you'd see Mother McFadden she had on her custom suit, matching hat, silk gloves and purse. We must not forget those fashionable high heels and yes, Mother McFadden, wore high heels up until she was 100 yrs. old and stopped only because she was confined to a wheelchair. What a remarkable woman, She was a "True Lady." Mother McFadden loved taking long drives around the Monterey Peninsula along the scenic Asilomar but especially around Seaside pointing out the places she could recall from her past. Mother McFadden had so many that loved her and that she loved. As she grew older she needed assistance and thank God she had dear friends, Sis. Mary B. Alexander, Sis. Monica Dunham and Sis. Francis Smith. They cared for Mother McFadden each and every day until Sis. Smith's health and the health of Sis. Alexander's spouse became extreme. Preceding her in death was her loving and devoted husband, Rev. Dr. C. Lewis McFadden, former pastor of the Friendship Baptist Church; Brother, Theodore Butler; Three Sisters, Geneva Frost, Katherine McThory, and Lola Conley Her remaining family members are the Friendship Church Family.

Mission Memorial Park

Mission Memorial Park

For almost 100 years, our cemetery has served the residents of the Monterey Bay Area. Mission Memorial Park opened in 1934 as Mission Memorial Cemetery and for many years was run by the City of Monterey. In 1988, Monterey Peninsula Mortuary opened on the grounds of our beautiful Seaside location. In 2007 we closed our Chapel of Seaside at our Noche Buena location and merged the two to become Mission Mortuary & Memorial Park....
