John Joseph Waterman

Apr 28, 1978 — Jun 27, 2026

It is with deep sadness John J. Waterman 48, of Syracuse passed away on June 27, 2026 with his family by his side at Upstate Hospital.

John is predeceased by his father, John S. Waterman; Son- Joshua Comins.

John is survived by his mom, Deborah Purhenn; sisters, Nina Purhenn and Ashley InFante; daughter, Julia Comins; stepbrother; and Life long friend Doug LaBreck.

As a child, John was full of happiness and laughter. He had an infectious smile and a gentle spirit that brought joy to those around him. John was creative, intelligent, and organized. He had the ability to work skillfully with his hands and he loved photography.

Like so many- John struggled with his mental health and addiction. These illnesses often overshadowed the beautiful qualities that made him who he truly was, but they did not define his heart. Our family hopes that, in sharing this part of his story, others will choose compassion over judgment and understanding over stigma. These diseases touch every community in every walk of life.

In his memory, we encourage open conversations, understanding, and support for those who are struggling. No one should have to fight these battles alone. If his journey encourages even one person to seek help or one family to hold onto hope, then his life will continue to make a difference.

Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in believing that he is finally at peace, free from the burdens he carried for so many years. John gave the gift of life through organ donation. His kidneys will help two individuals continue their own journeys of life.

We'd like to thank Upstate Neuro unit 9E, the doctors, nurses, chaplain and social worker for excellent care.
