Richard M. Gerharz
Nov 17, 1962 — Jul 25, 2026
Richard M. Gerharz, of Syracuse, passed away on July 25, 2026 at the age of 63.
Rick will be remembered for his curiosity, strong convictions, and deep appreciation for wine, food, books, and music. He loved sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for wine with others, particularly through his work at Vinomania and other local wine and liquor stores.
Music was another important part of Rick’s life. He built an extensive collection of every genre of music and frequently attended live performances throughout the community. Whether discovering a new artist, visiting a local bookstore or record store, enjoying a neighborhood coffee shop, or dining at an independent restaurant, Rick believed strongly in supporting Syracuse’s homegrown businesses.
Rick also worked throughout his life to help create a more peaceful and just world. During the 1980s, Rich began his political and community activism through events organized by the Syracuse Peace Council and other local peace organizations. His commitment to social justice reflected his belief that individuals could make a meaningful difference in their communities.
Above all, Rick will be remembered for the passions he shared, the causes he supported, and the conversations and experiences he enjoyed with those around him.
Rick is survived by his son, Joey; his brother, Scott; his sister-in-law, Angela; his niece, Sydney; his nephew, Griffin; and many beloved cousins, aunts, extended family members, and friends.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Rich on Saturday, 8/8, from 2-4PM at The Wedge on 2802 James Street in Syracuse.
