Derek S. Fritcher
Jul 8, 1979 — Jul 12, 2026
Derek Steven Fritcher, age 47, died on July 12, 2026, in Meridian, Idaho. He was born on July 8, 1979, in Tacoma, Washington.
Derek fondly grew up in small town Bonney Lake, WA and spent much time in Tillamook, OR with his maternal family. From a young age, he had a love for sports, playing soccer and basketball and becoming part of a winning Little League baseball team.
As a late teenager he moved to Boise, ID and began working alongside his dad's company Stoneworks. That work grew into a nearly 30-year career in the granite industry. He also attended Boise State University, studying social work- a field that reflected his deeply caring nature and gentle soul.
Music was one of Derek’s greatest passions. He began collecting records at the age of 14, spending countless hours searching record stores throughout Seattle and Boise. A true multi-genre music lover, he developed a particular love for hip-hop and the art and sound of record scratching, taking great pride in having the right equipment and setup and eventually dubbing himself DJ Flow.
Beginning at age 16, Derek earned guest spots on Green River College’s radio station and later on Radio Boise’s Krush Korner. He had an insatiable impact on the hip-hop community of Boise, performing at clubs alongside artists and groups including Mad Ro, Ready Starr, Kamphire Kollective, REK B-Boy Krew, and Anjhal, among many others. His talent and dedication gave him opportunities to meet some of his biggest musical influences, and he deeply treasured the memories and experiences from that chapter of his life.
Derek found joy in many things: nature, space, animals, sunsets, photography, the nuance of film, and the art of cinematography. He loved the outdoors, a good Pacific Northwest drive, hiking, and the beauty of the Boise foothills and Bruneau sand Dunes. His four-legged companion, Pablo, was almost always by his side.
Derek felt strong about personal growth. He practiced meditation, visited Buddhist Monasteries and attended silent retreats. He even transformed a fear of flying into a passion for skydiving, earning his solo certification and completing as many as 50 jumps throughout Idaho and Washington.
Derek was a calm and grounded man, living life in the present. He was not only humble, he was caring and deep and you could easily find yourself in hours-long conversations with him. He had a great sense of humor and was well liked by all— a true go-with-the-flow kind of guy.
Derek left this world on his own terms, after a deeply personal journey toward finding peace. His family and friends will always cherish the memories of Derek during the times when he was happiest and healthiest. His unique spirit will remain in our thoughts and heart forever and ever.
He is survived by his parents, Diana Furrow of Washington and Mark (Colleen) Fritcher of Boise; his siblings, Katrina Furrow-Jacobson of Seattle, Matthew Fritcher of Idaho, and Daniel Fritcher of Utah; two nieces and one nephew; his aunt, uncles, cousins, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his brother, Steve Fritcher, and his beloved canine companion of 16 years, Pablo
