James Melvin Conant

James Melvin Conant, 99, passed away peacefully at home on May 23, 2026, with his son Bart by his side.

James "Jim" Melvin Conant was born on March 15, 1927, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Lawrence Melvin Conant and Katherine Aymar Baumburger. He grew up in New York alongside his parents and younger brother, Barton. An accomplished athlete, Jim wrestled throughout his school years and into college, where he set multiple records.

Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Jim's parents encouraged him to begin college early before enlisting in military service. After passing the New York State qualifying exam, he entered Harvard University in 1943 at just 16 years old. His studies were interrupted by military service, but he returned to complete his education, graduating in 1947 magna cum laude with a degree in philosophy.

Jim joined the Navy on his 18th birthday after famously memorizing the eye chart to ensure he would be accepted. During his service, he spent time stationed in Washington, D.C., and Boston.

After the war, Jim worked for Junior Achievement in Denver. While there, he was invited to appear on a radio show hosted by Hollyn Gee. The meeting would change the course of his life, and the two were married in 1953. They welcomed their daughter, Patience, in Boulder in 1957 and their son, Barton, in Lexington in 1959. When his work later brought an opportunity with IBM, Jim chose to move his family back to Boulder.

In 1974, Jim married Jimmie in Vail after several days spent skiing together—one of his many passions. Together they blended their families, raising Jim's two children and Jimmie's four children, and made their home in Aurora.

Following a long and successful career with IBM, Jim and Jimmie fulfilled a lifelong dream by building their own 42-foot sailboat, Sunshine. They spent the next 14 years sailing around the world, exploring the islands of the Caribbean, transiting the Panama Canal, crossing Gatun Lake, and venturing into the vast Pacific Ocean. Their journey carried them west through the tropics, north as far as Hong Kong, and eventually around the southern tip of South Africa before returning home to the Atlantic.

His love of sailing never faded. After completing their voyage in 1993, Jim and Jimmie settled in Greeley and purchased a smaller sailboat, JJ, which they kept at Carter Lake. During the warmer months, friends and family could often find him on the water. Between sailing, tennis, skiing, and taking his beloved dog Kilo on long walks along the ditch behind his home, Jim remained active well into his 90s.

Blessed with an exceptionally sharp mind until his final days, Jim remained engaged with the world around him. He enjoyed participating in his coffee club and computer group and took pride in keeping up with the latest technology and innovations.

In 2021, Jim became a great-grandfather, a role he cherished deeply. Weekly lunch dates with his great-grandchildren quickly became a treasured tradition. Being a grandfather and great-grandfather was among the greatest joys of his life, and he delighted in sharing his favorite activities, interests, and adventures with the younger generations.

Jim is survived by his children, Patience, Barton, Stan, and Steve; his grandchildren, Eric, Tyler, and Jessica (Mike); his great-grandchildren, Emrie and Carter James; his niece, Cathy (Don) and family; and his nephew, Scott (Joanne) and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Katherine Conant; his brother, Barton Conant; his beloved wife, Jimmie; his daughter, Laura; his son, Jim; and his nephews, James and Keith.
