Melvin "Mel" Beatty Geist

June 10, 1931 — May 7, 2026

Melvin “Mel” Beatty Geist, a longtime respected member of the Greeley, Colorado community, passed away peacefully May 7th. Born in Sterling, Kansas on June 10, 1931 to Harlan and Elsie Beatty Geist, he was just shy of his 95th birthday. He was a devoted husband and was preceded in death by his wife Gladys Geist and Sister Mary Ann Potter. He is survived by his five sons and families, Michael (Carol) Geist, Randall (Penni) Geist, Leroy “Lee” (Julie) Geist, Russell (Terri) Lenhart and Roger (Mary) Lenhart. The family extends to 18 grandchildren and a multitude of great grandchildren.

Being a strong devoted Christian man, Mel had a deep and abiding faith and lived his life guided by those values. An active and valued member of St. John’s United Church, where his fellowship and commitment to his faith community was greatly appreciated.

Mel was the 4th generation builder following in the steps of his father Harlan Geist. He built homes with his dad in Longmont before moving to Greeley in the early 1960s. In Greeley he helped shape the community through his craftsmanship, vision and leadership.

Mel had Geist Homes Inc. and was a founding member and first President of the Home Builders Association of Northern Colorado in 1969. He received the honor of Builder of the Year in 1975. He was also instrumental at the state level in forming the Home Owners Warranty Corporation and was a member of the state board for 10 years. Other notable contributions included the Coordinating Committee for Vocational Education at Aims Community College and a similar panel at Greeley West High School. He was also a founding member of the West High Booster Club and officer in the Greeley Quarterback Club. In his last years of work he worked for BMC building materials. He leaves behind not only the homes he built, but in the lives he touched with his kindness, humor, and unwavering dedication to others.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, In his early retirement Mel and Gladys liked to travel in their motor home, fish and play golf. Mel was cherished for his great sense of humor and wonderful personality. Often sharing a laugh or story he made people feel welcome. In retirement he had a weekly “Tuesday Night Guys Get Together”. He took great pride in his family and they were the center of his world. He always had great pride in their lives and accomplishments. His love, wisdom and guidance will continue to live through them for generations.

Mel will be remembered as a man of faith, generosity, integrity and heart. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing him. We would also like to thank Optimal Hospice & First Light Home Care for the great support for Mel’s final weeks.
