Early Life and EducationDiane Watkins Ramsey, aged 80, passed away on Monday, December 8, 2025, at her cousin's home inAlexandria, VA. She was born in Farmville, VA on March 17, 1945, the daughter of the late Dorothy(Jasper) and Frank Ramsey.Diane graduated from Needham B. Broughton High School in 1963. She maintained treasuredfriendships with her “Diva” group, and the yearly gatherings with them were a valued part of her life.She continued her education at North Carolina State, graduating in 1967 with a degree in Recreation andParks Administration.

Collegiate AchievementsDuring her time at North Carolina State, Diane was a varsity cheerleader and became the first femalemember of the fencing squad. While taking a physical education class led by fencing coach Ron Weaver,she accepted his invitation to join the varsity program, which had previously been all-male. Dianeexcelled, winning both local and state competitions. These accomplishments occurred prior to thepassage of Title IX in 1972, which prohibits sexual discrimination at any school receiving federal financialassistance.

Professional CareerDiane dedicated over 19 years to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. In her role, shesupervised open space land preservation, acquisitions, and recreational development for cities,counties, and the state. She was committed to ensuring the principles of Title IX were upheldthroughout her career.

Surviving Family and FriendsDiane is survived by numerous cousins and friends, each of whom was deeply impacted by her kindness,integrity, and genuine care. Throughout her life, she fostered meaningful relationships, offering supportand compassion to all who knew her. Her thoughtful gestures and unwavering warmth created lastingbonds, making her presence a cherished part of the lives she touched. Diane’s passing has left aprofound void in every heart she touched, and her memory will continue to inspire those fortunateenough to have known her.

Funeral Services and DonationsDiane’s memorial service will take place at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 2701 CameronMills Rd, Alexandria, VA 22302, on Saturday, May 9 at 11:00 a.m. Instead of sending flowers, you areencouraged to plant a tree in Diane’s memory or contribute to the Arbor Foundation as a tribute.
