Larry Dean Pagel Obituary

December 4, 1945 - July 10, 2026

Larry Pagel, beloved husband, father, grandpa, great grandpa and friend, passed away on July 10, 2026 in Roseville, California after a hardfought journey with Lewy Body Dementia. He was 80 years old.

A native Rosevillian, born on December 4th, 1945 in Sacramento, California, he grew up attending Roseville schools, played sports, graduated from Roseville High School, Class of 1963 and was a part of the 1962 RHS Championship Baseball Team. Larry had an incredible work ethic in the jobs that he held around town including a paper route, mowing lawns at the cemetery, and working as an usher at the Tower Theatre on Vernon street. He attended Sierra College and earned his AA in Drafting and started his career in 1965 for the City of Roseville where he retired as the Director of Public Works in 2002. Many of the roadways we drive on and bridges we cross over in Roseville were projects that Larry had his hand in throughout his 37 year career with the city, including the famous, “Pagel Pass Way”.

Larry was the cherished husband of his wife, Donna of 59 years, married on July 15, 1967, a deeply devoted father to his sons, Darrin Pagel, his wife Susan, and Lance Pagel, his wife Natalie, a beloved grandpa (GPa) to Mary Clark-Sanchez, her husband, Archy, Peter Pagel, his wife Shania, Annie Pagel, Isabella Pagel, Ava Pagel, Giselle Pagel and Gabrielle Pagel and great grandfather to Penelope Grace Clark. Family was most important to Larry. He enjoyed Scouting with his sons & grandson, family backpacking trips, Sunday Pagel Family Dinners, Grammie & Grandpa Mondays, and lots of memory-making trips with his kids and grandchildren.

Larry is survived by his younger sister, Sherry Barker and preceded in death by his older siblings, Joanne Epps and Charles Pagel and his parents Ted and Mabel Pagel.

Beyond his family, Larry poured his heart into his community. He and Donna attended First Presbyterian Church (now Centerpointe) where they served as youth leaders, he was the Men’s Ministry Director, and a Session leader. Additionally, Larry coached various youth sports teams for the boys, participated as an active leader in Boy Scouts for many years, and was a dependable neighbor and friend.

Those who knew Larry well would say he was a man of integrity and lived his life just like he trained for and ran his 20 marathons: step by step with purpose and intention. He loved Jesus, he loved his family and friends, and lived life well.

One of his life verses, Isaiah 40:31, says, “...but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

A private family gathering, celebrating Larry’s life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Larry’s name to the UC Davis Alzhiemer's Disease Research Center where their goal is to advance the understanding of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.
