Margaret "Ann" Gray Carpenter

On February 20, 2026, Ann reached her hands upward and peacefully surrendered her soul to Heaven at her home in Monument, CO—exactly as she had wished. She was 92 years young.  

She was born to Dr. Herschel F. Gray and Margaret B. Gray on January 14, 1934. A graduate of the University of Arkansas, she was a pioneer for women in STEM, earning a BS in Chemistry and a minor in Zoology. As a teacher, her love of learning never ceased, and in 1978, she received her Master's Degree in Education from the University of Alaska, Anchorage. For 27 years, she shared her knowledge with students across the country as she followed her husband Warren’s distinguished career in the USAF.

Known as Ann or Annie to most, many others lovingly called her “Mom”. Annie found great joy in playing golf, reading, traveling the world, entertaining, visiting with friends, and eating a good piece of chocolate. She even became an accomplished painter, having received personal instruction from Bob Ross on his wet-on-wet technique.

Later in life, she faithfully donated her time at the USAFA Community Center Pharmacy with the American Red Cross and was a loyal volunteer at her beloved Church at Woodmoor.

Ann was a “class act” with a great sense of humor, an infectious laugh, the kindest heart, and a sweet and humble soul who never spoke an unkind word. Mom loved deeply and was deeply loved. We will all miss her beautiful face, sparkling green eyes, and welcoming smile.

Mom would tell you that her family was her most cherished treasure. She never passed up the opportunity to express her gratitude to them, for the friends who called and visited, and “the village” that helped care for her over the years, particularly: Amy, Anne, Sarah, Suzie, and her “earth angels” Giget and Elia.

Those awaiting a long reunion in Heaven include her husband, Dr. Warren “Doc” Carpenter; her parents, brothers, and nephew. She is survived by three devoted daughters, all eternally grateful for the gifts of love, strength, guidance, kindness, and unconditional support; blessings that they will carry in their hearts and memories of her forever: Gray Church (Al), Karen Duff (Jack), and Wendy Kerns (Pat); her beloved grandchildren: Kristi (Nathan), Kyle (Kat), and Ryan (Rebecca) and great-grandchildren. She also leaves nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A memorial service will be held at The Church at Woodmoor in Monument on May 29, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at Woodmoor “Barn” Community Center, 1691 Woodmoor Drive in Monument, CO 80132. Together we will share food, drinks, and fond memories of Annie. All who knew and loved Mom are welcome.
