Richard Henry Karns

Richard H. Karns, born August 21, 1939, in Leon, Iowa and raised in Martin, South Dakota, passed away on August 23, 2026, in Aurora, Colorado, just two days after his 87th birthday.

A longtime Mason, Richard was recently honored with his 65-year Masonic pin, recognizing more than six decades of dedication to the Masonic fraternity. He was also a devoted Shriner and proudly served as Potentate of El Jebel Shrine in 2004 and 2005. His commitment to the Masonic and Shrine organizations was an important part of his life and reflected his dedication to fellowship, service, and helping others.

Richard retired at the age of 69 after a fulfilling 25-year career as the owner of an American Family Insurance agency. He took great pride in his work and in the relationships he built with the people he served.

Richard was preceded in death by his only child, Kevin. He carried Kevin’s memory with him and cherished the time they shared.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Karen; his sister, Jill and her husband Doug; and his brother, Kim. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Courtney and her husband, Jerod, and Andrew and his wife, Danette; and his five grandchildren, Anabell, Andrew, Lilli, Elaina, and Jordan.

Richard’s family, friends, Masonic brothers, and fellow Shriners will remember him with great affection and gratitude. His life was defined by the relationships he nurtured, the service he gave to others, and the love he had for his family.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.
