Rose Marie Smedsrud

March 27, 1933 — April 26, 2026

Rose Marie Smedsrud, age 93, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and aunt, passed into eternal life on April 26, 2026. She was born as Rose Mary Hager on March 27, 1933 on the family farm near Balta North Dakota, where she was raised with her two brothers and two sisters. She later changed her middle name to Marie. After graduating from high school as valedictorian, she went to Minot State College, joined a sorority, and obtained a teaching degree. There she met her future husband Arnold M. Smedsrud. They were married, November 25th, 1950, at Camp Polk, Louisiana. After her husband left for the Korean War, Rose remained in Louisiana and became a Nanny for a wonderful family. She would later return to North Dakota with her newborn son, David, and made Minot, ND their home.

Rose's occupations included Schoolteacher, Bank Clerk, Secretary to the Base Commander at Minot Air Force Base, and a Representative with the Social Security Administration. Her greatest career accomplishment would be the endeavor she took with her husband to purchase Eddy's Bar and Lounge in Minot. They later changed the name to Arny's Bar and Lounge. They owned this establishment for over 20 years, and then retired in Colorado, where their children and grandchildren lived.

Rose was very involved in her church, family, friends, and her community. She always enjoyed attending family gatherings and events. Rose and Arnold participated in their children's and grandchildren's activities, and always gave unconditional love, encouragement, and support.

Rose was a member of the Minot Quota Club and involved with various investment clubs in both Minot and Denver.

She loved to garden, sew, and crochet. She and Arnold were fabulous dancers and delighted in showing off their moves at weddings and date nights. They were married for a blessed 68 years.

Most Summers were spent with her family at Rice Lake. In retirement, she and Arnold enjoyed traveling and spending time at in Vail, CO. In 2020, she finally took a Caribbean cruise with her daughter, granddaughter, and extended family.

Rose is survived by her son David Smedsrud and his wife Cheryl, her daughter Cindee Smedsrud (Battle), grandson Andrew Smedsrud, granddaughter Theresa Battle, great grandchildren and expecting great grandchild, sister-in-law Mitzi Hager, and numerous nieces and nephews.
