Janet Davis Flageolle, 78, of Lakewood, Colorado, passed away peacefully of natural causes on June 9, 2026, after spending precious time with the family she loved so deeply, including a video call with her beloved sister. She was cherished beyond measure; and leaves behind a legacy of kindness, creativity, unwavering faith and unconditional love.

Early Life

Janet was born in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1947 to Howard Woster Davis, Jr. and Grace (Chapman) Davis, both of whom proudly served in the United States Navy. Because of her parents' military careers, Janet and her sister, Joellen, spent their childhood moving to various duty stations and proudly considered themselves “Navy brats”.

During her earliest years in Japan, Janet and her sister were lovingly cared for by two women, Keiko Mo and Keiko Way. Because they were the primary caregivers while her father served in the Navy, Janet learned to speak Japanese before she learned English. Japan has always remained close to her heart and one of her first and favorite oil-based paintings was Mount Fuji.

Summers were often spent with her beloved grandparents, Opal and Claus Rohweder, warmly referred to as "Mama Ro" and "Papa Ro," who owned the Rexall Drug Store in Assumption, Illinois, which they purchased just after World War II.

Working alongside them stocking shelves, organizing magazines, and helping wherever needed instilled in Janet a strong work ethic that remained with her throughout her life. Even as a little girl, Janet's creativity was unmistakable. One favorite family story recalls Janet planting bean seeds in the lawn as a little girl. Rather than discouraging her, her grandparents encouraged her efforts, proudly joking that her beans were growing faster than the crops in the nearby farmers' fields.

Marriage, Family and Home

While working at Dolly Madison in Denver, Janet met the love of her life, Don Flageolle. They married on August 12, 1988, and together built a warm and welcoming life in their cabin-style home in Indian Hills, Colorado.

Indian Hills became Janet's happy place. She lovingly designed the wraparound deck, planted flowers, trees, gardens, painted and filled the home with artwork that reflected her warmth and creativity. Their home quickly became a gathering place where family and friends always felt welcomed.

Following Don's passing in March 2014 after twenty-six wonderful years of marriage, Janet lived with various family members. Hardly a day passed without her mentioning how deeply she missed her beloved husband.

Career

Janet worked as a bookkeeper throughout her career and later became the bookkeeper for H&F Services, Inc., the family business she helped establish with her family in 1996. As the company celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, her contributions remain an important part of its foundation. Her dedication, honesty, and remarkable work ethic left a lasting impression on everyone who worked beside her. Those same values became part of the legacy she passed on to her children and grandchildren.

A Life of Creativity

After the death of her father in 1999, Janet discovered Bob Ross painting programs and began what would become one of the greatest passions of her life.

Using oils and other artistic mediums, she created beautiful landscapes, wildlife portraits, and nature scenes. One of her favorite paintings depicted Mount Fuji in Japan—a place that held special childhood memories. Her parents had displayed a similar painting in their home, making it a lifelong reminder of where her story began.

Today, her artwork continues to hang in the homes of family and friends, serving as lasting reminders of her extraordinary talent. Janet also loved gardening, decorating, baking, sewing, cake decorating, caring for animals, playing bingo with friends, and creating warm spaces where family gathered.

Family

Janet is survived by her sons, David Hughes and Wayne Hughes (Debbie); her grandchildren, Steven James Hughes, Trey Steven Hughes (Quinn), Amy Lee Karlstrum (Aaron), and Ryan Hughes; and her great-grandchildren, Baxter Douglas Karlstrum, Titus Jaxson Hughes, and Liam Wayne Karlstrum. She was also joyfully awaiting the arrival of two additional great-grandchildren—one to Trey and Quinn Hughes and one to Ryan Hughes along with his fiancée, Cierra Lubrick. Janet also embraced Cierra's son, Colt Noyes, as part of the growing family she loved so dearly.

Janet is also survived by her sister, Joellen Trautman (Harold); her nieces, Karyn Meyer Totty and Janet Bolosan (Michael); and her nephews, Chris Russell (Michell Kendall) and Dan Meyer.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Don Flageolle, and by her parents, Howard and Grace Davis.

Remembering Janet

Above all else, Janet's greatest joy was her family. She was endlessly supportive, deeply faithful, fiercely loyal, and extraordinarily creative. Whether she was painting, gardening, baking, decorating, or simply spending time with those she loved, Janet made people feel welcomed, valued, and cared for.

"Let Go and Let God." Those simple words reflected the faith by which Janet lived. Though she will be deeply missed, her love, creativity, and unwavering devotion to her family will continue to inspire all who knew her. Her love, generosity, quiet strength, creativity, humor, and steadfast faith will continue to live on in the hearts of everyone whose life she touched.

A private family Celebration of Life was held on June 13, 2026. The family is grateful for the many prayers, kind words, and expressions of sympathy received during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Janet's honor may be made to Compassus Hospice.
