Stan was born on a farm in Dallas County, Arkansas. During high school he played on the football team, was a member of Future Farmers of America, and drove the school bus when he was a senior. Stan spent his summers helping his father on the farm. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Henderson State Teachers College in 1966, and was commissioned as an armor second lieutenant, entering active duty in July of 1966.
He served in the Vietnam war where he commanded D Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry, 196th Infantry Brigade from March 1969 through September 1969, then commanded F Troop, 17th Cavalry until March 1970. Awards and decorations include: Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star with V Device and Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal with service star, Vietnam Serve Medal with 3 stars, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon with service star, Overseas Service Ribbon with 4th award , Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Combat Infantry Badge and Parachutist Badge.
After retirement from the Army in 1992, he enjoyed hunting in Arkansas, walking his dogs, and attending Vietnam veteran reunions.
Stan is preceded in death by father, Jesse Harrison, and mother, Shirley “Odell” Gatling-Harrison. He is survived by loving wife, Antoinette; son Richard (Susannah); daughter Adriane (Travis); sister Eva Jane; stepdaughter Misty Chavez; Grandchildren Alexander, Sawyer, and Ava Harrison; Andrew, Joshua, and Sophie Marsh.
Stan never met a stranger; he easily made friends with everyone he met. He always walked around for miles and loved to hunt. Now he is with all his “dawgs” in heaven – remember the southern drawl! Stan had a big heart, taught us respect is earned, be true to your word, hold yourself to the highest standards, and set the example for others to follow. All our lives are better because he was a part of it! Stan and his amazing storytelling will be missed and talked about for years by the many people that knew and loved him!
Celebration of life will be held May 15th in Sparkman, Arkansas.
