Maurice Gerald Madden

Maurice Gerald Madden, died peacefully in his sleep on August 21, 2026, at home, surrounded by loved ones.

Maurice Gerald Madden, lovingly referred to and known to us all as “Jerry, Dub, Dubber, Butch, Coach and Papa,” was born on February 8, 1944, to William Patrick and Catherine Madden in Summerfield, Kansas. He grew up in nearby Marysville. He was the youngest brother to Mary, Bernie, and Jim Madden.

His friends back home growing up called him, “Dub” or “Dubber” and knew him as a go-getter from a very young age. When he was eight years old, he exchanged hanging movie posters in nearby town merchants’ windows for a ticket to the show. Sweeping the lobby of the theater to earn what he referred to as, “you can’t see a movie without popcorn and a pop, it’s just a law!” When he needed a haircut, he approached the owner of the barbershop, to sweep hair on Saturdays in exchange for a weekly haircut. And, what seemed to be a very proud moment to him was his shoeshine business. He also learned the great art of pool playing in his hometown at the local pool hall near the railroad tracks.

Jerry was a multi-sport athlete at Marysville High School, Home of the Bulldogs! He was a gifted athlete and tremendous friend and teammate. After graduation, Jerry moved to Denver, Colorado in 1962. He met the love of his life, Susan Anne Shea in 1963, they were married at St. Catherine of Sienna’s Catholic Church in North Denver, Colorado on June 25, 1966. 

Jerry attended Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado where he played football and baseball before his football career ended due to a knee injury. After that, he and Sue moved to Pueblo, Colorado where he attended SCSC (Southern Colorado State College) currently known as Colorado State University at Pueblo and continued his baseball career. 

Pueblo is where he had the opportunity to play “Fast Eddie” in a game of pool which is one of the boys’ favorite stories in his own version of “The Hustler.” The game of pool became a wonderful memory and a family treasure.

After graduating college, Jerry moved back to Denver where he took his first job at Lakewood Jr. High School as a Physical Education Teacher and Head Football Coach for the Freshman football team. After he left Lakewood Jr. Jerry went on to teach and coach at both O’Connell Jr. High School and Moore Jr. High School, both in Jefferson County. Jerry was inducted into the Jefferson County Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013 as the winningest Ninth Grade Football Coach in both the State of Colorado and Jefferson County History. When Sue became ill, Jerry passed on the opportunity to become a Varsity Head Football Coach, where he probably would have been one of the most accomplished coaches in the State to date, but in true Jerry fashion, he chose family first. Jerry continued to impact and reach many other athletes as he continued his coaching career helping both Jay, Brad, and his grandchildren.

One of his most amazing gifts was that he never forgot a face or a name, and you were never a stranger. Jerry was approached in airports near and far with yells of “Coach Madden, is that you?” During his last few months, the number of former players, colleagues, friends, and family that cameto tell stories and visit was a true testament to the mark he left on so many.

Jerry was proceeded in death by his beautiful wife Sue who passed away in 1991 after a courageous and valiant battle with cancer, his parents, his sister Mary and her husband, Bob and his brother Bernie and many others he held so near and dear to his heart.

Jerry is survived by his sons, Jay (Shalene), Todd, Brad (Kristen). His grandchildren, Ashley (Walter) Newman, Katelyn (Brant) Killmon, Logan, Tyler, Sammi and Luke. Great-granddaughter, Lucy Sue Newman. His brother, Jim (Loretta), companion, Judy Russell and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, September 28, 2026, 10:00 a.m. at Storyline Church, 14605 W. 64th Avenue, Arvada, Colorado, 80004

Reception immediately following at the Elks Lodge Arvada, 5700 Yukon Street, Arvada, Colorado, 80002

In lieu of flowers, Jerry has asked that gifts be presented to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital to stop cancer forever!!
