Steven "Steve" Phelps, 76, passed away on September 10, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. Whether you knew him as Steve, Coach, Unc, a golf partner, a sports fan, or a friend, chances are you have a story worth telling.

Biography

Born in 1950, Steve grew up in Denver and developed a love for sports that stayed with him his entire life. In high school, he was a standout athlete, playing quarterback, shortstop, point guard, golf, and tennis. Long before he was known as "Coach," Steve was always finding a way to compete.

Steve was a Broncos fan from the beginning. As teenagers, he and a friend walked down to Mile High Stadium and bought season tickets for the family, starting a tradition that lives on today. More than sixty years later, his sister Marilynn and nephew Jeff still attend games.

As an adult, Steve shared that love of sports by coaching Denver Pee Wee Football. Long after the games were over, many still knew him simply as "Coach."

Golf became one of Steve's greatest passions. A scratch golfer and tournament champion, he loved the game, the friendships, and maybe a few side bets along the way.

Steve worked hard and played hard. He spent many years with Weyerhaeuser and Colorado Ice and Cold Storage, earning the respect of those he worked alongside.

Steve loved trips to Las Vegas and established traditions of his own, including handing out scratch tickets to family every Christmas. He also had a passion for Mopar cars, especially his firecracker red 1972 Plymouth Satellite known as "The General."

More than anything, he leaves behind no shortage of stories, laughs, and memories.

Family

Steve is survived by his sister, Marilynn Bowman; daughter, Tricia “Ace” Rodriguez; grandchildren, Kendra Rodriguez and Justin Sloan; great-grandchildren, Jayce and Myla. He is also survived by his nephew Jeff Bowman and former wife, Connie Turman; along with countless friends, former players, and golf partners.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Genevieve Phelps.
