Eugene Daniel Engelbert
September 26, 1954 — November 14, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Eugene Daniel Engelbert, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, on November 14, 2025, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Gene was born on September 26, 1954, in Kingman, Kansas, to Laura Lea and Edward L. Engelbert, the eldest of ten children.
At the age of 17, Gene enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in Hawaii. Throughout his life, he traveled widely for both work and pleasure, living in Beloit, Hawaii, Wichita, Boise, and eventually making his home in Cañon City. Gene earned a bachelor’s degree in business quality management and computer operations technology from Southwestern, as well as a master’s certification in project management from Villanova University. His industrious spirit flourished through his business venture he proudly co-owned.
A dedicated athlete, Gene’s passion for health and fitness led him to competitive running and, later, to skiing and mountain biking during his retirement years. He embraced new hobbies wholeheartedly, especially his love of playing pool. Gene cherished the mountains and deeply loved his home in Cañon City he shared with his wife, Judy.
Gene is survived by his wife, Judy Edwards; his siblings Caroline Braum, Anna (Joe) Emmel, Arnold (Jake)(Lynette) Engelbert, Michael (Andressa) Engelbert, Mary Engelbert Derowitsch, Lisa Duncan, Barbara (Greg) Clay, and Cheryl Rombough; sister-in-law Cindy Engelbert; his six children Brad Engelbert (Pamela), Travis Engelbert, Vanessa Engelbert, Jill Woodward (Benjamin), Melissa Engelbert (Jesse), and Jessica Engelbert (Samuel); and his eleven grandchildren—Xaiah, Kai, Paisley, Asher, Rainier, Josiah, Rose, Jude, Gabriel, Renleigh, and Cassian.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Laura and Edward; his brother, Edward Engelbert; brother-in-laws Vince Duncan and Jack Derowitsch; nephew, James Emmel; and niece, Tina Stout.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Gene’s life on December 27, 2025, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., at 270 South 151st Street West, Goddard, Kansas 67052.
Anyone that would like to attend 6 p.m. mass after the celebration of life is invited to go to St. Mark Catholic Church at 19230 West 29th St N, Colwich, KS 67030.
Gene will be remembered for his larger-than-life presence, his lively political commentary, and his unforgettable dancing. His goofy, dedicated, intelligent, and strong spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a charitable donation or planting a tree in his memory.
