Rex Roger Mortensen

Rex Roger Mortensen, age 75, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, passed away on September 11, 2026. He was born April 4,1951, in Big Rapids, Michigan, to Ivan G. Mortensen and Harriet Jean (Sapp) Mortensen.

Rex graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1969 and attended Ferris State University. Rex was preceded in death by two infant brothers, Denis Ivan in 1947 and Timothy John in 1949. He is survived by his brother Gale (Patricia) Mortensen and his sister Glenna (Keith) Maneke, all of Mecosta, Michigan, and several nieces and nephews.

Rex worked at various places including Ferris, Drury Inns, UC Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, and most recently at Ft. Carson. Rex will be remembered for his kindness and his willingness to always help others. He enjoyed writing and had a commentary on the fourth verse of the “Star Spangled Banner” that was widely presented and appreciated. His essays about everyday life were displayed at Medallion Senior Living in Colorado Springs. At one time he won a chili cook-off contest with a concoction including root beer.

In his younger years, Rex enjoyed helping at his grandparents’ farm in Grant Center and spending time at Round Lake. He participated in bowling and softball leagues. He was a volunteer firefighter for Hersey Township.

Rex was an active member of the Academy Christian Church in Colorado Springs. He was a Past Worshipful Master in the Masonic Lodge, many times Worthy Patron in the Order of Eastern Star, and a lifetime member of DeMolay. He participated in many activities that benefited local charities and projects. He spearheaded one such project that raised money for the Honor Bell currently used in southern Colorado for veterans’ funerals.

The family sincerely wants to thank Medallion Senior Living, Mrs. Shirley Short, and other members of his church for the love and care they provided.
