Joseph A. Calandra of Melbourne Beach, Florida, was born on May 4, 1928, passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 29, 2026. “Poppy” will always be remembered for his thoughtfulness, kindness, warmth, strength, and most of all, love and devotion to his family. Born in New York, New York, to Francesco and Monda Calandra.

 Joseph was educated in the public high schools of New York City. He ran track for the City College of New York and went on to play professional baseball in the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates organizations. He later served as a referee in the National Basketball Association. Joe built a distinguished career at Grumman Aerospace, from which he retired as a manager of Materials and Procurement Department. His work supported multiple aviation projects, including the Lunar Module. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille R. Calandra and daughter Lucille Anello. 

He is survived by his children, Joanne Mesawich and Joseph J. Calandra; his grandchildren, Christopher T. Anello, Joseph A. Calandra, Kristin Calandra James, Michael T. Calandra, Julia Mesawich, and Sabrina Mesawich; and his great grandchildren, Conor Cox Calandra, Isabella James, Sophia James, and Joseph T. Calandra. Joe was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His loving, kindness, generosity, good spirit and wisdom will never be forgotten.

 A memorial service will be held on September 12 at Immaculate Conception Church 3780 S Highway A1A, Melbourne Beach, Fl, 32951 at 11:00am.
