Louis "Lou" Angelo Giammarino

Jun 15, 1929 — Aug 7, 2026

Louis “Lou” Angelo Giammarino, 97, of Melbourne Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2026. He was born on June 15, 1929, in Springfield, Massachusetts, to the late Rosaria and Gerardo Giammarino, immigrants from Naples, Italy, who established their family and made their home in the United States.

Lou was a devoted husband, father, and brother. He was the proud father of six children and one of four siblings. Family was an important part of Lou’s life, and he carried with him the values, traditions, and strong work ethic instilled by his Italian heritage.

A faithful Catholic, Lou attended Immaculate Conception Church in Melbourne Beach.

Lou had a remarkable athletic career beginning at Cathedral High School in Springfield. A gifted two-sport athlete, he excelled in both baseball and football. In baseball, Lou played second base and was named All-Western Massachusetts in 1948. In football, he played center and linebacker and started in every game. His athletic talents earned him a scholarship opportunity to the University of Detroit, but Lou chose instead to pursue his passion for baseball and played in Canada.

One of the highlights of his baseball career came when Lou helped lead his team to a state championship. In the championship game against Brockton, Massachusetts, he delivered an eighth-inning RBI triple that helped secure a 3–2 victory. His accomplishments on the baseball field were later recognized with his induction into the Cathedral High School Hall of Fame. Lou also spent time playing with Canadian baseball teams and participating in Major League Baseball practice opportunities.

In 1965, Lou began a successful career as the owner and operator of The Meadows Banquet, Night Club and Lounge, which he operated until his retirement in 1985. That same year, Lou and his family made their home in Melbourne Beach, Florida, where he began the next great chapter of his life.

Lou’s retirement was anything but quiet. For the next 35 years, he enjoyed commercial sport fishing throughout Florida. Fishing was far more than a hobby or occupation for Lou—it was his passion. Among his many memorable accomplishments was a remarkable haul of 82 pompano in a single day. He also landed an impressive redfish measuring 42 inches and weighing 48 pounds. Whether on the water or sharing stories of his adventures, Lou found great joy in the outdoors.

During the off-season from baseball, Lou also enjoyed hunting in New Brunswick, Canada, creating countless memories in the outdoors that he cherished throughout his life.

Lou will be remembered for his competitive spirit, love of sports and the outdoors, entrepreneurial nature, devotion to his family, and his deep appreciation for life. His remarkable journey—from the son of Italian immigrants in Springfield to a celebrated athlete, successful business owner, devoted family man, and passionate Florida fisherman—is a testament to a life lived with purpose, determination, and enthusiasm.

Lou leaves behind a loving family and a legacy of memories that will be cherished for generations to come.
