He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, kindness, and unwavering devotion to both his family, friends, and his country.

The Honorable Michael Walter Wynne, 21st Secretary of the Air Force, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away on October 17, 2026, at the age of 82 in Melbourne, Florida. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, kindness, and unwavering devotion to both his family, friends, and his country.

Born in 1944, in Hillsborough County, Florida to Dorothy and Edward Wynne. He graduated from The United States Military Academy (West Point), Class of 1966. He was commissioned into the Air Force as a First Lieutenant, and he taught astronautics at the United States Air Force Academy. He then built a meaningful career in the defense industry. He started with General Dynamics and was instrumental in managing the F-16 and Main Battle Tank programs. This led to his appointment as president of the Space System division in San Diego, CA. This promotion allowed him to return to his roots on the Space Coast. Lockheed Martin later acquired the division, where he continued to lead the Space Launch Vehicle programs until his retirement from the defense industry in 1999.

Michael joined the George W. Bush administration in 2001 as the Under Secretary for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics. He further supported our country by being named the 21st Secretary of the Air Force in 2005, where he played an integral role in modernizing and sustaining the Air Force. He retired from the federal government in 2008, leaving a legacy of a motivated, ethical, and accountable Air Force for the defense of the United States.

On July 23, 1966, Michael married his soulmate and best friend, Barbara Hill Wynne. They shared 60 wonderful years of marriage, creating a life full of love, laughter, and adventure. He was a devoted father to Lisa, Collene, Karen, and Laura, and a proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was happiest with his family, exploring the world, and knowing that his work and influence helped make it a better place.

He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Hill Wynne; his siblings Maureen (Al) Guarino, Cathy (Phil) Bessette, and Peter (Rose) Wynne, daughters Lisa (David) Henkhaus, Collene (Douglas) Finn, Karen (Mark) Murphy, Laura (Scott) Killette, and a large circle of extended family and dear friends.
