Apr 26, 1947 — Sep 24, 2026
James “Jim” Allen Asbury, 79, of Pinellas Park, Florida, passed away September 24, 2026 at Northside Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Jim was born on April 26, 1947, in Charleston, West Virginia. Around the age of seven, he and his family moved to Hillsborough County, Florida, where he grew up and attended Hillsborough High School.
Jim proudly served nine years in the United States Army from 1964 to 1973. During his military service, he trained at Fort Gordon in Georgia and had assignments in Korea, Fort Carson in Colorado, Fort Hood in Texas, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, and Fort Meade in Maryland.
Following his military service, Jim worked in a variety of professions, including carpentry and sales, and even spent time delivering singing telegrams. In 1979, he began his career with the United States Postal Service in Tampa. He worked at the “Big House” near Tampa International Airport, served for a time as President of the Tampa APWU, and later worked as a window clerk at several postal locations throughout Tampa. After 28 years with the Postal Service, Jim retired in 2007.
Jim had a wonderful singing voice and a lifelong love of music. As a boy, he sang on a radio program broadcast from his church in Tampa. Later in life, he enjoyed a side career as a “lounge lizard” with his brother-in-law, and the two also recorded commercial radio jingles for several local businesses, including the well-known Kapok Tree Restaurant in Clearwater. Jim was also a gifted storyteller and loved entertaining family and friends with funny and memorable stories from his years at the post office and throughout his life.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, Cyril Asbury; his mother, Atry Laney Asbury; his brothers Franklin, Bobby, Donny, Danny, Jack, and Perry; his sisters Aretta, Velma, and Esther; and his granddaughter, Shannon Asbury.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Griffith Asbury; his daughters, Dana M. Warner and Amanda K. Wainwright; his grandchildren, Michael, Shelah, Alice, Fallon and Kylee; and his great-grandchildren, Landon, Shelby, Charlotte, and William. He is also survived by his sisters Frances Pruitt and Judy C. Allen, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim will be remembered for his humor, his stories, his music, his service to his country, and the many lives he touched throughout his journey. His voice, laughter, and unforgettable stories will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be held from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. on October 5, 2026, at Anderson-McQueen Funeral Home, 7820 38th Avenue N, St. Petersburg, Florida 33710.
An interment ceremony with military honors will be held at 1:30 p.m. on October 6, 2026, at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.
Jim’s family invites those who knew him to join them in remembering a life filled with service, music, laughter, family, and stories that will not soon be forgotten.
