James Carroll Trent

James Carroll Trent, affectionately known as "J.T.," passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026, at the age of 83 in Weeki Wachee, Florida.

Born on April 11, 1943, in Logan, West Virginia, Jim was raised in Logan and carried his Appalachian roots with pride throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edna and Cole Trent; his sister, Janet Kincaid; and his brother, Bill Harold Trent and wife Edith.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia Esme Trent of Weeki Wachee; his son, Anthony Carroll Trent of St. Petersburg, Florida; his grandson, Ronald James Trent of St. Petersburg; his sister, Linda Lois Adkins of Clovis, New Mexico; and his brother, Dana T. Trent and wife Carole of Dayton, Ohio.

A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Jim served his country honorably before beginning a distinguished career in the emerging field of computer technology. Following his military service, he worked briefly for IBM before joining Florida Power Corporation, where he built a remarkable 35-year career. Jim retired as Director of Computer Services following Florida Power Corporation's acquisition by Carolina Power & Light in 2000.

Not one to remain idle, Jim continued his professional journey with BayCare Health System, where he served as Director of Computer Services until his retirement in 2005.

Throughout his career, Jim became known as a mentor and advocate for countless professionals entering the computer and information technology fields. Many former colleagues from Florida Power Corporation fondly recall how he provided opportunities, encouragement, and guidance that helped shape their careers. Among the many stories shared over the years are memories of J.T. riding his motorcycle through both the Florida Power Corporation and Carolina Power & Light data centers—a reflection of his spirited personality and unforgettable sense of humor.

Outside of work, Jim enjoyed target shooting, riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, driving his beloved Volkswagen and Datsun 280Z, and spending time with his cherished puppies. He graduated from Logan High School and later attended St. Petersburg Junior College.

Jim will be remembered for his leadership, generosity, adventurous spirit, and the lasting impact he had on both his family and the many people whose lives and careers he influenced.

Jim will be laid to rest at Bay Pines National Cemetery where he will receive military honors for his service in the USAF.
