James Lee West

Dr. James Lee West, Jr. Dr. James Lee West passed away on Monday June 23rd in his home after a prolonged illness. He was 82. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, he was the son of the late James Lee West, Sr., and the late Everel Myrtle Hackett. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Billy Jean West. Dr. West attended Centenary College and LSU School of Medicine. He was an orthopedic surgeon in St. Petersburg for over 50 years and retired from practice in 2005. He has lived in St. Petersburg since 1954, moving here after finishing his residency at LSU, in New Orleans. He was a member of the Pinellas County Medical Society since 1955, the Florida Orthopedic Society since 1957, and a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons since 1957. He served in the Reserve Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service at the U.S. Marine Hospital in Staten Island, New York in 1949 and 1950. He was a long time member of the Rotary Club of St. Petersburg, and had been active in the Episcopal Church community in St. Petersburg. He had an true thirst for knowledge and information of all kinds. He especially enjoyed the study of maps, geography and history and he loved to travel to different places and learn new things. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Rich West, his children: James Lee West, III and wife Carolyn of Mobile, Alabama, Terry West Cobb and husband Bill of Watkinsville, Georgia, Paul Slocomb West and wife Kathy of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and David Lloyd West and wife Carole of St. Petersburg. He has eight grand children; Andrew, Laura, Michael, Sarah, Lee, Allison, David, and Sydney. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 27th, 2:30 PM at St. Peter's Episcopal Cathedral, in St. Petersburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Hospice of the Florida Suncoast, St. Peter's Cathedral or a charity of your choice.
