John Young Gicking
Sep 18, 1940 — Jul 23, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, John Young Gicking, on July 23, 2026, after a brief illness.
A Marine Veteran, retired police officer, and detective, John wore many hats throughout his life. Beneath those tough-guy professions was a genuinely kind and caring man who never turned down a good beer and a friendly conversation. He loved his family unconditionally, adored his cat, and always made sure the neighborhood cats were looked after, too. He could build something beautiful out of wood, enjoy a little friendly competition over fantasy football, and make friends just about anywhere he went. Whether you knew him for decades or shared a beer once with him at Tiki Docks, chances are you knew his name, and he knew yours. Most importantly, he was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend who meant so much to so many.
He is survived by his sons, Scott Ronning and John Gicking; his daughter, Melissa Morse; and six grandchildren. He is now reunited in peace with his beloved wife, Patricia Gicking.
A celebration of John’s life will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2026. Services begin at Anderson-McQueen Funeral Home (2201 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St N, St. Petersburg, FL) with a gathering from 10:00–11:00 AM, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM.We will meet after the memorial service for a 12:30 PM graveside service and interment at Sunnyside Cemetery (5300 19th St N, St. Petersburg, FL). Following the burial, all family and friends are warmly invited to gather at 1:30 PM at The Polonia Club (4350 16th St N, St. Petersburg, FL) for food, refreshments, and an afternoon of sharing stories and fond memories.
