George Michael Jacobs

George Michael Jacobs was born July 11,1946 in Superior, Nebraska to parents George and Doris Jean (Keeler) Jacobs of Montrose, Kansas. 

He passed away May 29, 2026 in Tucson, Arizona. 

After spending his early years on the farm near Montrose, Kansas, the family moved to Fort Collins, Colorado.

 Mike, as he was known, graduated from Cache La Poudre High School in 1964. He attended Colorado State University, graduating with a degree in anthropology in 1968. 

He then attended graduate school at the University of Arizona in Tucson. 

After receiving his masters degree in archeology, Mike began his life-time career at Arizona State Museum as Curator of Collections where he became well-known for his work with pottery of the southwest. Because of his vast knowledge of the southwest he was known at the museum as “Mikeopedia”.

 For many years he was the editor of The Kiva, the Journal of the Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society. Mike loved doing archeological fieldwork. The highlights included participating in the UA field school at Grasshopper, Arizona and Mimbres Survey in New Mexico. He also spent two summers in Tabun, Israel on a NSF sponsored excavation of et Tabun Cave.

 Mike had a passion for reading and his greatest possessions were his books.

 His library was extensive on many topics of which he loved to share.
