John Joseph Schmidt

John Joseph Schmidt, 80, of Arvada, Colorado passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, service, and commitment to others.

Born on April 28, 1946, in New York, NY, John was raised primarily in Hackettstown, NJ, where he graduated from high school before pursuing a degree in electrical engineering at Trenton State College, NJ. During this time, he also gained valuable experience working at Elastimold, which helped shape his technical knowledge and professional career. After briefly living in New Mexico, John made his home in Arvada, Colorado, where he built a successful career as a business owner and sales professional with Hamilton Associates, Inc. His technical knowledge, professionalism, reliability, and strong work ethic earned the trust and respect of those he worked with throughout his career.

A defining part of John's life was his more than 50 years of volunteer service as a Reserve Deputy with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Jeep Patrol and Mounted Patrol in Golden, Colorado. For over five decades, he dedicated countless hours to supporting the Sheriff's Office and serving his community. The friendships, memories, and experiences he gained through his years of service remained an important part of his life. His commitment reflected his loyalty, perseverance, and deep sense of responsibility to others.

John was the father of his only son, Douglas Schmidt, from his first marriage. John later married Jane Schmidt, with whom he shared many years of marriage. Through their marriage, John became the stepfather to Jane’s three children. Together, John and Jane shared many adventures, including traveling, playing golf, enjoying the outdoors, and creating memories throughout their years together.

He was preceded in death by his father, Stanley Schmidt; his mother, Julia Holek Schmidt; and his sister, Arleen Benson. His family legacy continues through his son, Douglas Schmidt (Rebecca); his two granddaughters, Amber Schmidt and Heather Schmidt; and his first great-grandchild, Maverick RJ Dapper.

He is also survived by his wife, Jane Schmidt; her children, Michael Burris (Judy), Lisa Bolton (Derk), and Gina Buchanan; and their children, Keara Kelsey (Jimmy), Cormac Buchanan, and Christopher Burris. He is also survived by many extended family members, friends, and members of the law enforcement community who were an important part of his life.

Outside of his work and service, John found great joy in the outdoors and the Western way of life. Throughout the years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time on horseback. His cabin was one of his favorite places, a place where he could slow down, enjoy nature, and embrace the lifestyle he loved. While at the same time, there was always a project waiting around the corner, whether it was improving something, fixing something, or simply staying busy with the things he enjoyed.

His memory will live on through the family he loved, the community he served, and the many people who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
