Peter David Bucknam
Sep 15, 1972 — Sep 26, 2026
Peter David Bucknam
Peter was born on September 15, 1972, and left this earthly realm to become stardust once again on September 26, 2026. He was surrounded by his family and departed under the light of the Harvest Moon.
Peter was the loving husband of Shelby Noel Young, his soulmate and partner in life. Peter and Shelby met in 2016, and immediately fell in love. They had 10 wonderful years together and married last Spring.
Peter was the proud father of Allison Elaine Bucknam (Ally) and Walker Field Bucknam. Ally and Walker were Peter’s pride and joy, and both chose to follow in his footsteps by choosing careers in geology. His co-parenting partner was Tiffany Bucknam, who supported Peter through his difficult cancer journey with love and compassion.
Peter is also survived by his mother, Susan Bucknam; his brother, Alan Bucknam; his sister-in-law Robyn Bucknam; and a host of uncles, aunts, and cousins. Peter was preceded in death by his father, David Lee Bucknam.
Peter was an established geologist, and had devoted a majority of his life to studying the earth’s layers. His family history of being intrigued by rocks and minerals ran deep. The family had four generations of work and/or volunteer service at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, where Peter was the museum’s very first intern. Graduating with two majors from University of Colorado and receiving his Master’s Degree from the Colorado School of Mines, Peter devoted his career to interpreting the Earth’s history and turning geologic insight into discovery and development at Yates Petroleum, Whiting Petroleum, and Petro-Hunt. His work included plays across the Rockies, such as the Lewis play in the Green River Basin, Turner plays in the Powder River Basin, Niobrara appraisal and development in the Denver Basin, evaluation of plays across the Rockies, and later work in the Powder River Basin and the Bakken of the Williston Basin. One of his strengths was connecting regional geologic ideas to the practical work of drilling and producing a well. He was a versatile, thoughtful geologist with a knack for seeing how the pieces fit together. His breadth of knowledge, curiosity, and ability to bring people and ideas together made him a valued colleague throughout his career.
On a personal level, he built his life around the philosophy of ‘don’t wait, find a way to make it happen’. Peter had always immersed himself in whatever he was doing from skiing to biking, from sailing to exercising the ‘fun’ cars, from backpacking to fishing … and then there were the rocks and fossils. His life revolved around caring for others, and in making those around him smile. His witty comebacks and uber intelligent humor often had people thinking days later about something he had said. He had a jovial, larger-than-life personality. He was the friend who showed up, the colleague you could depend on, and the person who made a difficult day feel survivable. He drew people in, made friendships feel immediate, and became the steady presence that held a group together. There were conversations about life and rocks over drinks, field trips, and his faithful YETI cooler, which introduced more than a few geologists to the value of reliably cold beer. As careers progressed, morning coffees downtown became opportunities to share papers, debate geologic ideas, and stay connected.
Peter is deeply missed, will always be celebrated, and never forgotten.
