Gene Allen Newcomm

After a 7-week difficult battle with stage 4 cancer that metastasized to his spine and organs, on June 26, 2026, Gene Allen Newcomm, 74, of Golden passed away peacefully at Lutheran Hospital holding his wife’s hand and surrounded by his loving family.

Gene was born in Denver, Colorado, son of the late Fred J. Newcomm, and mother LaVena Lois Gross. His father passed away when he was 10 years old and his brother, also named Fred, took him under his wing. Brother Fred taught Gene everything he knew about carpentry as well as other trades. It wasn’t long before Gene found that learning the trades came naturally to him, so he attended Red Rocks Community College and received a degree in masonry construction.

Gene was known as the Pleasant View chicken rancher in his early years. In 1971, he met the love of his life, Karen Kreutz, and they married in 1975, forever sweethearts. They quickly discovered their love of the mountains, fishing, old cars, and spending time with family. Together they built the house of their dreams where they lived for over 50 years. This house became the cornerstone of many memories for their girls, as well as many large family Christmas gatherings.

In the 1980s, Gene learned the process of applying commercial and industrial coatings of all types – spray, powder, polymer, and Teflon. In 1985, he started his own business called Systems Protective and Technical Coatings, and later co-founded Powder Coating Specialties with his friend, Jack Howell. Often thought of as a father figure, Gene taught those around him the value of success in hard work - always encouraging them to make decisions without fear, and to be bold in their convictions. More than anything, he taught them to think for themselves. He was well known throughout the coatings industry for his precision and managing top-rated custom jobs to large-scale industrial and architectural projects.

On January 1, 2018, Gene and Karen retired together and began traveling to the places they longed to visit. Over the years, their love for each other had become an inspiration to family and friends, and continues to shine brilliantly for all who have known them. Gene will be remembered as the beacon of hope and guidance for his family. He was exceptionally generous, and his love of family is legendary. Whether he was navigating the waters of Glendo Reservoir on his boat, fishing in the morning hours at a favorite lake in Steamboat Springs, 4-wheeling on the Grand Mesa, or simply sitting in his garage sipping a nice, cold DCL (Delicious Coors Light), Gene was sure to make those around him laugh. His sense of humor and storytelling will be recalled for decades to come.

Gene is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Karen; his daughters, Melissa (Wayne) Isaac, Amy (Wayne) Young, Corinne (Brian) Evenson; his grandsons, Cole, Tanner, and Hunter Young; his sister Debbie Wertin, his brothers Bob and Jerry Hall, and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews. He is preceded in death by his father Fred J. Newcomm, mother LaVena Lois Gross, brothers Fred, David, and George Newcomm; sisters Lynette Houghton, and Bonnie Ferguson; and son-in-law Brian Evenson.

A celebration of Gene’s life will take place on Sunday July 19, 2026 at Three Trees Chapel, 13416 W. Arbor Place, Littleton, CO 80127. Service starts promptly at 2:30 pm. Doors will open at 2:10 pm for seating. Reception to follow service until 6:00 pm. As you all know, Gene loved his Hawaiian shirts. So, to honor him, Hawaiian or floral attire is welcomed.
