Charles Allawas

Charles George Allawas died at his home on Wednesday, November 28, 2012. He was 90 years old, and was active to the very end. Known to family and friends as Charlie, he was born June 14, 1922 to the late Nicholas and the late Julia Allawas, the third of seven children. He was a first-generation American, and a life-long Democrat who voted that way in every election, to the delight of one daughter and the chagrin of another. Charlie was an avid card and chess player and a lover of big band music. He was employed by Pan Am at Kennedy Space Center during the exciting Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs, and worked there during the Shuttle program as well. He loved the space program, and followed and supported it into his retirement. He had his attributes and his shortcomings, as do we all, and at the end of his life was hopeful that he had done some good along the way, and hopeful for understanding and forgiveness where he had not. He is survived by his three daughters, Julie (Randy) of North Carolina, Meryl (David) of Merritt Island, and Nicole (Mike) of Virginia, three grandchildren, one great-grandchild in the making, one sister, many nieces and nephews, and three ex-wives. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Salvation Army or the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Divine Mercy Catholic Church in Merritt Island, 10:00 am visitation with family, 11:00 am mass.
