Albert John Haas

Albert “Al” John Haas died on August 14, 2026, in Melbourne, Florida, of complications following a stroke. He was 87 years old.

Mr. Haas was born in Philadelphia on April 7, 1939, and grew up in Berks County, Pennsylvania, attending Mount Penn High School and Albright College. He became a journalist, first for a labor weekly in Reading, then at the daily Pottstown Mercury, and finally at the Philadelphia Inquirer, where he was a reporter and columnist from the mid-1960s until his retirement in 2001.

Mr. Haas retired to Melbourne Beach, Fl, but continued to work on a freelance basis for the Philadelphia Inquirer for many years. He published one novel and was working on a children’s book at the time of his death.

Mr. Haas is survived by his wife of 43 years, Joanna Starr Hynes; his daughters Deborah Haas and Farah Lawrence; five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by his two sons, Albert F. Haas and Sean L. Haas.
