Charles Sedwick Robertson

Brig. General Charles Sedwick Robertson U.S.M.C. Ret. (Robbie), 91, passed away on May 3, 2011 in Rockledge Fl, with his family by his bedside Born in 1919 in Anniston, Alabama to Elias Richard and Hattie Leola (McCall) Robertson Proud Brother of: Kathleen, Mary, Roy, Estelle, Louise, Perkie, Dick, Dede, Buddy, Bookie Graduated from Rome High School, Rome, Georgia where he delivered newspaper's, was a soda jerk, fountain manager and a surveyor's assistant. Enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1938 at Paris Island, S.C. Served aboard the USS Arkansas and at the Marine Barracks in Philadelphia. He enlisted and held every grade from private to first sergeant (then the highest enlisted grade). He graduated first in class of 339 at Officer's Candidate School in August 1942. He married Mary Betty Hughes from Rome Georgia in May of 1943. Married to his loving wife of sixty eight years they lived and toured around the globe. He won the Bronze Star for World War II action in Okinawa with the Sixth Marine Division. In 1945 he was in China as the platoon commander of "love" company 4th Marines 1st Marine Division. He received the Legion of Merit with combat "V" for Korean service with the 1st Division and the 1st regiment. Next came study at Quantico's Junior School, a tour at Headquarters and duty as an advisor to the Brasilian Marine Corps and instructor duty in Brasil at the Brasilian Naval War College. Study at the Armed Forces Staff College Preceded command of the 2nd BN, 8th Marines and a tour as executive officer of the regiment. He joined the 1st aircraft wing in Japan in 1963, returned to the States as the wing G-4 and another Headquarters tour. Duty with the Southeast Asia plans and policy, Pacific Command won him a second Legion of Merit. He next commanded the 1st Regiment, 1st Division in Viet Nam. Robbie won a third Legion of Merit as Assistant Division Commander of the 1st Division. Returning to Headquarters in March, 1969 he became the Deputy Fiscal Director. He retired in 1974 as Fiscal Director of the United States Marine Corps and moved to Florida. While farming on his grove in Merritt Island, Florida he pursued his education, receiving a Masters Degree from Oklahoma in 1975 and a Masters in Teaching from Rollins in 1978. He then became an instructor at Morris Junior College. In 1994 he and Betty built a home on Look Out Mountain in Alabama and lived there until they returned to Melbourne, Florida in 2004.Robbie was V.P. National Society of Military Comptrollers Washington, D.C. 1972-1974 and President of Honor America Melbourne, Florida 1975-1976. He was an avid tennis and softball player. His hobbies were reading and languages. He was fluent in Portuguese and Spanish, held an interpreter's rating in French and could communicate in Mandarin. He was an outstanding Man who will be dearly missed. He is survived by his Loving wife Betty, Daughters Marsha Lindfelt and Husband Hal, Gayle Marshal and Husband Bob, Son, Carlos Robertson and wife Terry, sister Dede Bagwell of Texas, Grandchildren, Rudi Marshal, Tanya Bernard, Malia Howe and Brooke Robertson and three great grandchildren Ciara, Gregory and Caitlyn. General Robertson will receive a full honors ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery in the near future.
