Maria de Jesús Gonzalez Llinás

November 2, 1931 — May 29, 2026

Maria de Jesús Gonzalez Llinás, age 94, passed away peacefully at home on May 29, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Havana, Cuba on November 2, 1931, Maria lived a life rooted in faith, love, and devotion to family. She met José Llinás on the fourth floor of the Instituto in Havana, beginning a love story that would span more than six decades. They married and soon moved to the United States as José began his medical residency in the Midwest. Together they built a beautiful life centered on faith, family, and service, sharing 65 years of marriage before José’s passing in 2019.

Maria was the heart of her family. A loving wife and devoted mother, she created a home filled with warmth, hospitality, and joy. She had a generous and loving spirit that made everyone feel welcome. Her children’s friends often felt like family in her presence, and many considered her a second mother. She had a remarkable gift for seeing the good in everyone and offering kindness so naturally that those around her felt truly known and cared for.

Her Catholic faith was the foundation of her life. Maria served her church communities for many years as a lector and Eucharistic minister and was deeply involved in organizing the annual Misa de la Caridad in Gainesville, Florida, honoring Our Lady of Charity, the patroness of Cuba. Even in later years, her faith remained a daily source of strength and comfort. She received Communion at home and continued to participate in Mass whenever she was able.

Maria found joy in life’s simple and beautiful moments. She loved reading and had a wonderful sense of adventure. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting, cooking for family gatherings, planning celebrations, and walking along the beach. Her happiest moments were when the whole family was together surrounded by conversation, laughter, music, and the people she loved most.

Maria is survived by her six children, Joe Llinás (Terri), Tom Llinás (Robin), Madeleine French (Kevin), Margie Llinás (Michael Goodman), Jackie Llinás (David Drake), and Lizzie Llinás; seventeen grandchildren, Margarita (Tyler), Viviana (Justin), Katherine, Gabriela, Joseph, Nicole, T.J., Emily (Robert), Eliza, Ozzy, Emma, Jake, Sammie, Zack, Ana (Zach), Alyssa, and James; nine great-grandchildren, Aidan, London, Julia, Reya, Eve, Calvin, Sydney, Leo, and Eli; her brother-in-law, Tomás Llinás (Donna); and many beloved nephews, nieces, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

All were blessed by Maria’s faith, optimism, and unconditional love. Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished and in the countless lives she touched through her kindness, warmth, and gentle spirit. If Maria could leave one final message to those she loved, it would be simple and true: open your hearts and love one another.

She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.
