Roderick Joseph Whelan

Rod Whelan was born at Mount Sinai Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio and grew up in Berea, Ohio where he met Mary Cutting, his beloved wife of 72 years. Together they had seven children, two pre-deceased, 18 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 3, soon 4 great-great grandchildren. As a young man, Rod served in the U.S. Navy as a quartermaster during World War II and was called up again to serve in the Korean Conflict. Rod had many interests throughout his life. His work was President of Fastener Industries, in Berea, where he also served on City Council, sat on the Hospital Board, and served on the parish council at St. Mary's Church. He was active in the community as well as a generous donor to causes he believed would benefit all. He was an active fundraiser for five different churches during his life. Among his hobbies was auto racing. While many children were still young, at home, he built race cars, and began driving them in his forties until he was seventy years old. After he stopped racing, he restored two vintage Model A's, and built and ran steam trains. He also loved to build things from wood - tables, benches, Rod and Mary spent their empty-nest years roaming the continent in a series of motorhomes. One of their favourite trips was to wine country in California. They also enjoyed visiting music festivals and their family spread across the continent. Rod passed away peacefully at home, with loved ones surrounding him. He was loved by many and will be missed.
